Pima County Raises Landfill Fees
Pima County’s Sahuarita Landfill will stay open at least one more year and the fees increased on July 1, 2010.
The Pima County Department of Environmental Quality’s Solid Waste Division is increasing the waste disposal fee at the Sahuarita Landfill from $10 to $15 per covered load, if the load weighs less than one ton.
Pima County had planned to close the landfill. In order to keep it open, the Pima County Board of Supervisors agreed to fund part of the deficit through County general funds, if the tipping fee charged to users increased, and if the Town of Sahuarita agreed to waive the approximately $100,000 annual fee the County pays the Town for hosting the landfill. The annual fee paid for increased road maintenance costs due to wear and tear from large garbage trucks. In exchange for the fee waiver, the landfill will accept the Town of Sahuarita’s bio-solids from the wastewater treatment facility at no charge.
