Sahuarita Road Project Update for March 28, 2012
The Town of Sahuarita has been working to widen and improve Sahuarita Road between Interstate 19 (I-19) and Country Club Road as part of the voter approved Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) 20-year transportation plan. Construction of the first phase of the project, I-19 to La Villita Road, was completed in January 2010. During that time, the design for the portions of the project east of La Villita Road continued to be finalized.
The Town is pleased to announce the second phase of Sahuarita Road construction, from La Villita Road to Nogales Highway, which began with sub-contractors clearing pecan trees this week. The initial Phase II construction activities will include the establishment of the new Sahuarita Road and Nogales Highway alignments through the existing pecan orchards, west of Nogales Highway.
The Phase II roadway improvements will be very similar to the first phase of the project and will include a 4-lane divided roadway, bike lanes, sidewalks, a new bridge crossing at the Santa Cruz River, drainage improvements, a new traffic signal at the Sahuarita Road/Nogales Highway intersection, and a new railroad crossing on Nogales Highway, south of Sahuarita Road. The Sahuarita Road improvements, west of Nogales Highway, will be constructed over the next 18 months, while the design for Sahuarita Road between Nogales Highway and Country Club Road is finalized. Project improvements east of Nogales Highway will begin after completion of the La Villita Road to Nogales Highway portion of the project.
