Quail Creek-Veterans Municipal Dog Park to Be Temporarily Closed on May 29

Quail Creek-Veterans Municipal Park Off Leash Dog Area will be closed beginning Tuesday, May 29, 2012 and will reopen on or before July 2, 2012, for the regeneration of turf and scheduled maintenance. The closure will last approximately five to six weeks.  Other areas of Quail Creek-Veterans Municipal Park will not be affected during this period.

The Town’s other off leash dog area, Anamax Bark Park, is located at 17501 S. Camino De Las Quintas and will be open during this time. Dog owners are encouraged to bring their pets to this location while the turf at the Quail Creek-Veterans Municipal Dog Park is regenerating.

Local dog owners have been enjoying the convenience of the Town’s off leash dog area at Quail Creek-Veterans Municipal Park to take their pets for exercise and enjoyment. In order to keep up the park’s needed maintenance, it is necessary to close down to the public on an annual basis just like the Anamax Bark Park, so the turf can adequately regenerate. The optimum time for closure is during the summer growing season.  The Town Parks & Recreation staff continues to work diligently to keep the off leash dog area in excellent condition, but heavy use makes upkeep challenging due to wear and tear on the turf and fixtures, as well as the problems that dog urine poses for turf.

The Town of Sahuarita Parks & Recreation Department thanks dog owners for their patience and for their tremendous support of the facility.  For more information, please contact Parks & Recreation staff at the Anamax Recreation Center (520) 445-7850, or Town Hall (520) 822-8896.

NOTICE OF PROPOSED CHANGES TO SAHUARITA TOWN CODE (Floodplain and Erosion Hazard Management)

The Town of Sahuarita is proposing to transfer a chapter of the Floodplain and Erosion Hazard Management section of the Town Code to a new Chapter 18.65 of the Zoning Code.  The regulations were adopted by reference to the county code by Mayor and Town Council and have been a part of the Town Code since April 24, 2006.  The regulations were codified directly from the Pima County regulations in effect at the time.  In the current proposal, the references to Pima County have been changed to the Town of Sahuarita.  Overall, there is substantively little difference between the current and the proposed regulations.  The following are of note:

  • Xeroriparian D has been eliminated from regulations.
  • The Planning and Building Department, in coordination with the Town Engineer, is responsible for the code administration.
  • Approval of mitigation plans are performed at a staff level
  • Reducing maintenance and monitoring of mitigation site to a minimum of 3-years with the option to increase to 5-years depending on plant conditions.

Previous comments made during the public input process encouraged the use of a sliding scale or percentage approach to prompt mitigation, rather than the regulatory trigger of 1/3 of an acre of disturbance.  Staff has not been successful in establishing a sliding scale process or percentage approach that would result in an equitable application of regulations, therefore, the 1/3 of an acre disturbance threshold has remained in the ordinance.

The draft is scheduled for public hearing before the Town Council on May 14, 2012.  Prior to the meeting staff would like to provide you with the opportunity to review and provide comments on the documents.  Feel free to contact Orlanthia Henderson with questions you may have on the chapter by telephone at (520) 822-8851 or by email at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
